History

The Permanent Bookshop was opened in May 2003, at its present location within Permanent Gallery of Brighton. Staffed by a volunteer contingent from the book group Borbonesa, it peddled a ‘choicest selection’ of artist-made books, zines and delicate novelties alongside the most compelling of robust art periodicals. The collection found favourable resonance with the ethos of Permanent Gallery, with its diverse range of local, national and internationally sourced stock, and sonorous endorsement of innovation.

The shop and the gallery are open 1pm-6pm Thursday to Sunday, and 11am-6pm on Saturday, or by prior appointment.

The bookshop regularly hosts launches, exhibitions and other events to celebrate the work of artists making books.
